The Artrageous Group

The Artrageous Group was formed by three Cypriot artists aiming to create a social–political manifestation that focuses on the role of the artist as an agent for public awareness who experiments however within a contemporary art context. Created in March 2004, Artrageous was launched on the initiative of the artists, Klitsa Antoniou, Panayiotis Michael and Melita Couta, with the prospect of welcoming more artists, whose work coincides with the concept of the group. All three belong to a young generation of artists, who have been working in recent years in Cyprus. They have exhibited widely in solo and group shows, both locally and abroad. What is common in the work of these three artists is the way they balance the impact of the socio-cultural setting of their country with the weight of the international contemporary art scene, as both influence them, and how these two influences are linked to their cultural identity. The work of these artists embodies cultural and political issues pertinent to their country of origin, which help to identify characteristics in the artists’ work that document a shared regional aesthetic and conceptual affinity.
