The Artrageous Group

Artrageous Group was launched on the initiative of the 3 artists, Klitsa Antoniou, Panayiotis Michael and Melita Couta with the assistance of Michael Schleifer, aiming to create social–political manifestations that focuse on the role of the artist as an agent for public awareness who experiments however within a contemporary art context.

Created in March 2004, with the prospect of welcoming more artists, whose work coincides with the concept of the group. All three belong to a young generation of artists, who have been working in recent years in Cyprus. They have exhibited widely in solo and group shows, both locally and abroad. What is common in the work of these three artists is how they balance the impact of the socio-cultural setting of their country with the weight of the international contemporary art scene, as both influence them, and how these two influences are linked to their cultural identity. The work of these artists embodies cultural and political issues pertinent to their country of origin assisting to identify characteristics in the artists’ work that document a shared regional aesthetic and conceptual affinity.

The Group is coordinating international events that invite artists to participate in events that have the character of a public interaction, a happening and a collective piece of work. In May 2004, the group presented their first event called NOMADIFESTA 2004 - "Pack your Suitcases" in Cyprus, with the participation of 300 artists. They are currently organising the second event called UNCLAIMED LUGGAGE which will be presented in Madrid in 2005.
